WARHOL LIVES: 2022 Print Market Report

by: Ron Rivlin (0)

Andy Warhol was not only one of the most groundbreaking and influential visual artists of the twentieth century, but an enterprising businessman who unapologetically capitalized on his celebrity to make money. “Business art is what comes after art,” he said. Marketing, mass production, commodification and branding were common motifs in his artwork. After a brush with death, he became acutely aware of his “business art” as a “kinetic machine” which would keep on making money without him. Over thirty years after his physical death that machine is still making money—and a lot of it!

Warhol lives in the market that trades in his prints and paintings, as sales of his art comprise more than five percent of global art revenues. The consistent appreciation of the Warhol art market over the past two decades has far outpaced the broader art market—and even the Dow Jones. This makes owning a Warhol print a smart investment, but how does a buyer navigate the Warhol market?

In the 2022 Warhol Print Market Report, Ron Rivlin, owner of the Revolver Gallery in Los Angeles, leverages his art expertise and experience to demystify the Warhol market for investors and collectors. He draws from numerous sources of art market data to present a holistic overview of the Warhol print market today, along with the updated 2022 Warhol Print Market Index. He explains how Warhol print prices are determined, their average rate of increase, and why the majority of Warhol prints sell for above their high estimate; how the market contracted during the COVID-19 pandemic, and why it enjoyed a historically strong return in 2021. The report also makes projections about Warhol prints to watch in the coming years, the long-term shift in Warhol collector demographics, and trends in the art world that affect the market.

Warhol lives in the art market that trades in his prints and paintings; in the influence and relevance of his life and work, that is constantly renewing itself in artists and admirers who take his genius in fresh and surprising directions; in exhibitions and documentaries that engage with an intergenerational audience of millions. Warhol lives!

The Reviews

Don’t let the subtitle fool you. This is much more than a market report. Actually, a good deal of the text deals with the history of Warhol’s life, his life’s works and legacy – all of which contextualize past and current “markets” and vice versa. The author Ron (Revolver) Rivlin has produced a scholarly work that will enrich your understanding of Warhol beyond what the various documentaries have to offer. I do not doubt that researchers will draw on the content of Rivlin’s absorbing work. The text is dedicated to promoting an educated understanding of Warhol and his art. Information about the performance of Warhol art in past and current markets is an intrinsic part of that story and is elucidated here as such. As part of that story, even the information on identifying a real vs. a fake was fascinating. The book contain beautiful picture from the Revolver Gallery collection as well as being beautifully written. The language is engaging and phrases employed cause pause for reflection as when there is reference to “representational imagery,” “industrial code,” “hypnotic cycle of consumption” and when Andy’s admission to hospital “condemned him to the architecture of his fears.”There is not a Warhol fan that would fail to appreciate this book whether there is intent to acquire a Warhol or not. For those who would be contemplating such an acquisition, not consulting this book may risk failure.

Excellent read. I will likely find myself returning to this book again and again when considering purchasing a Warhol. This book gives an incredible amount of detailed information on Warhol’s market; art collectors could use more reports like these, for other artists too. Warhol by the Numbers is an especially intriguing chapter.

amazing. great narrative of andy’s iconic story with print market index and updated collector demo information interlaced throughout. the book is visually supported by a outstanding graphic layout showcasing andy’s work alongside the text’s body. cool getting the state of the union on the “one man art market” at the crossroads of a new era of art and tech which we all know is a pivotal point in art history. enough said, go ahead and cop this book! is as much of a pleasure to peruse as it is to read and andy would be proud! looking forward to the next one as we continue forward into this new digital art space era! pretty cool proceeds go helping unicef also. in closing the idea is not to live forever, but to create something that will bravo mr rivlin 👏

This covers a pretty wide range of Warhol's illustrious career. Very enjoyable read with interesting info even as someone who is just dipping their toes into learning about the art movements of this time period. This has a focus on market performance to show his scope of impact on the market of selling art, but also does a good job of covering his personal life and career in general as well. Highly recommend, particularly if you are wanting to learn about the scope of Warhol's impact on the art world in general.

I’m an art dabbler but don’t know any Warhols because I’ve always thought of that market to be one with limited upside. Curious to learn more, I bought a copy of WARHOL LIVES. I read it over a few days and can now say that I have a much better understanding of how the market works. It was well written and kept me engaged. I’m now seriously considering adding a Warhol to my collection.

Warhol lives! Warhol has always been one of my favorite artists so I had to get my hands on this. The book is very well written, composed of 5 separate sections that make for a total review of Warhol in contemporary culture and of course his market in the present day. The market data is extremely in-depth, and I'm surprised there are not more books published like this for the markets of other artists. Plus the book is beautiful to look at! Bought myself a copy and another for a friend of mine.

I purchased Warhol Lives for my dad (Kevin S) for his birthday; therefore this is his review. Andy Warhol and Rupert J. Smith both live on today through Ron Rivlin and his uniquely evolving Revolver Gallery..."Warhol Lives," the book, like the artist, checks all the boxes; past, present, and future!

Excellent quality!! Very happy!! The “Made In the USA” date in the back of the book states “Monee, Illinois and the date I ordered the book. So it was made especially for me!! How cool is that? Thank you!
