The Reviews

The first rental smelled so terrible of smoke that I literally couldn't use it. I had it away from me at the table and it was overwhelming. When I was done doing my homework my hands smelled like cigarettes. I had to put it in a box outside until I could send it back and I ordered a new one. New one is great, barely used. The textbook content is not bad as well, I really like the images it provides of the diagrams.

Thankfully amazon has samples of their eTextbooks. This sample had poor resolution of figures/graphics on pages 5, 13, 14, 32, 33, 48 when viewed with Kindle for PC. As such, I bought the textbook for class and corresponding pages are sharp. I wouldn't get eTextbook for this one until possible digital rendering issue fixed.

I paid for a new textbook and received a used textbook.

Am I the only one who has loved Cengage lately? Great book so far. If the later chapters are as detailed as the first few, then amazing!"Vocab" words are highlighted, and then a section on the side of the page has the definition too. "Large" words (eg. ubiquitous) have definitions. Great work Cengage!

Its the book I needed for my class and its nice to have it digitally rented.

I can't for the life of me to give half a care about the needs of companies. "Computer Scientist" entails a degree of academic proficiency that can be both applied and utilized to make innovations in the field. If you're going to study CS just to be beholden to the needs of a company and not the field itself, call it the study of "applied-computing in economics" or something along the line. The book treats the readers as if they have, for the first time of their waking life, witnessed an operating computer system. The focus on business impacts is profound, while that of technical savviness is lacking, to say the least.I do not debate the importance of programmers' understanding of and integration into the business world. Yet, such a focus did not bring the advancement of the fields of mechanical engineering, civil engineering, medical,... and it shan't, as well, here.

It was used for a college course. It was a kindle rental and worked for my course. I passed :)

The book is in perfect condition, as to be expected with a new book. There are no access codes for Cengage products included, but that is because all of those cost much more than this book.

The basic knowledge to be a software engineer or DBA

Great diagrams and examples.
